hmm.. it seems that it has been more than a year since i last wrote about my conversion to a semi-vegetarian diet.. and already more than 2 years since my resolution to partake this form of diet.. i have not yet lost my stomach for meat.. i do still consume the occasional meat which in most cases is due my anti-wastage principles.. and also mainly during social meals where it would be cumbersome to reject meat in its entirety.. a social meat-eater i used to call myself.. more recently i have adopted a more universally-friendly term known as flexitarian.. in this way.. people have less of a case for calling me a hypocritical vegetarian who eats meat.. as is the case.. i already eat very little amounts of meat or animal produce.. and gradually i am decreasing intake of eggs and milk.. who knows.. maybe 10 years down the road i would become a true vegetarian.. though probably i would still pick on any meat product that apparently would go to waste otherwise..
now i shall give a review of health and fitness concerns with regards to my new diet system.. after 2 years of flexitarianism.. i have remained at least as fit and healthy if not more.. my listless attitude that i am increasing exhibiting in recent years.. if my closer associates have noticed.. is, however, in my opinion better attributed to my lack of faith in the continuity of this materialistic world we are living in now.. which is in another topic i may write about in the future.. so now i think i can consider myself a positive living example of how a diet with restricted meat intake can actually have a good effect on one's own body.. not to mention the benefits to the environment.. despite this.. it is not to say that a meat-restricted diet is suitable for just anyone.. it has so far been favorable for me because i am seldom selective about what i eat and thus consume a wide variety of grains, fruits and vegetables.. this is also a reason why i am also not actively advocating others to adopt a similar diet as me.. as a picky person would find themselves short of many essential proteins and minerals..
anyone who bothers to read this.. i give this good advice.. eat less meat.. it's healthier and you know you are doing your part in preserving the environment we have so well-adapted and evolved to live in.. stop causing the environment to change into one which we would find detestable..
this is a tray advert used in an indian vegetarian restaurant at Capitol Building along North Bridge Road, Singapore.. a somewhat new vegetarian restaurant named nALAn Restaurant - Purely Vegetarian.. the food is not too bad and not too pricey either.. so it's worth a go for vegans..
okay.. back to the advert.. which amused me a fair bit.. this was the first time i saw humans being put into the same category as herbivores.. which i cannot say the points are untrue.. but humans do have remnants of sharp teeth in the form of canines.. though for tearing meat or plant stalks i cannot say for sure.. they have, however, dulled through the course of evolution and that is another issue to think about..
to me.. humans are more like scavengers.. we barely have the strength, speed and agility to hunt.. what we depend on are our ability to build and operate tools (i.e. spears, arrows, guns..) using our greater than average intelligence over our fellow earthlings.. we have rather short, delicate tongues that are most definitely not suited for grappling grass and leaves.. neither do we have the intestinal system to properly digest plant fibre.. and all these inadequacies actually make us inferior to most creatures out there, in my humble opinion..
although we are hardly herbivores.. to say that we are on top of the food chain is definitely an overstatement.. and we should rather consign ourselves to subsistence on the lower end of the food chain and take pride in that.. scavengers as we are.. there is nothing wrong with that.. that might actually be one of the most important points for the survival of mankind..
finally i would like to highlight a quote from one of the greatest mind that ever existed..
i attended a screening of "Meat The Truth".. which tells us about the detriments to Earth due to human's obsession with meat-eating.. this was the flyer given during the event..
this has come as a greater revelation to me because.. for more than a year now.. i have become a "free-willed vegetarian".. or "social meat-eater".. or "circumstantial carnivore" (whatever you may call it).. i had afore thought that energy and raw materials was the limiting factor to the prosperity of humankind on Earth.. now apparently the issue of food looks increasingly likely to bring upon our downfall..
compassion and cruelty of animals aside.. personal health concerns aside.. we must come to see that the production of meat is seriously taking its toll on our planet.. the rearing of livestock simply consumes unrealistically large amounts of resources, and generates so much pollution as compared to the cultivation of crops alone.. we may as well be drilling a hole through a century old oak tree just to extract a single toothpick from its core.. then leaving the oak to die..
the concept of food has evolved since the prehistoric era from "the need to eat" to "what to eat?".. so should we "eat to live" or "live to eat"?.. many people are even obsessed about food that lunch and dinner has become a permanent topic of debate..
therefore.. i weep for the future of mankind.. at least i know that if a famine does occur.. i wouldn't be the first to starve.. maybe i should start learning how to eat grass..
